Cleaning 101
Disinfection and Cross Contamination
Doctors and researchers preach the benefits of disinfecting surfaces and preventing cross contamination to reduce the risk of an outbreak; however, few people, even in the jan/san industry, understand how to use disinfectants correctly, or know the true definition of disinfection.
"Disinfection refers to a higher level of proven antimicrobial efficacy than sanitization," explains David Gregg, regional marketing director of hygeine and preservation of Lonza. "While sanitizers must show a 99.9 percent reduction in bacteria, disinfectants must demonstrate total inactivation of a stated pathogen."
People often treat a disinfectant like a spray and wipe cleaner. But if you don't follow the entire instructions, you aren't effectively disinfecting. You first need to preclean; then apply the disinfectant and let it sit for the prescribed dwell time before wiping away.
Surface to surface contamination is also a threat, but can be combated by using color-coded cloths to designate which surfaces they are to be used on.
Experts also recommend the use of microfiber to prevent cross contamination because it picks up and stores dirt, bacteria and germs, rather than sliding them around like other wipers can do.
The Invisible Killers
With worldwide pandemics looming (Influenza A), and antibiotic resistant superbugs (MRSA) on the rise, institutions, companies and individuals are faced with the dilemma of how to protect their employees, families and pets from infectious disease without exposing them to toxic chemicals.
